How RideRadar works

RideRadar searches the vehicle listings of Australia's marketplaces at once and sends you to the seller. This is what happens between those two things.

RideRadar is a search engine for vehicles that are already for sale somewhere else. It does not sell cars or motorbikes, hold deposits, or take a commission when one changes hands. It reads the listings that Australian marketplaces publish, puts them in one index, and links you back to whoever posted them.

That one decision — that we point at listings instead of hosting them — shapes everything else on this page. It is why the search is free, why we keep very little about each vehicle, and why the "View on carsales" button is the most important control in the product.

The problem it solves

A used vehicle in Australia is advertised on whichever marketplace its seller happened to pick. A dealer in Wodonga lists on carsales; the same dealer's trade-ins go through Pickles or Manheim; a private seller uses Gumtree because it is free; a bike ends up on bikesales. None of these sites can see each other's stock.

So the ordinary way to buy is to run the same search five or six times, in five or six slightly different filter vocabularies, and try to hold the results in your head. Nobody does this well. People pick two sites and accept that they are not seeing most of the market.

Read

Every marketplace we cover has some public interface that returns its own listings — that is how its website populates itself. An adapter per source speaks that interface and nothing else, so a change at one marketplace cannot break the others.

Normalise

Marketplaces disagree about almost everything. One writes 2019, another MY19. One says Odometer: 84,000 km, another 84000. One files a Ranger under "Ute", another under "Light Commercial".

Normalising means mapping all of it onto a single canonical shape, so that a search for a 2019 Ranger under 100,000km returns the same vehicle no matter which site it came from. This is the least glamorous part of the system and by far the largest share of the work.

Deduplicate

The same vehicle is often advertised in more than one place — most commonly a dealer syndicating stock across several marketplaces. Showing it four times would make the results useless, so near-identical listings are collapsed, and you see the sources it appeared on rather than four near-copies.

What we keep is what a result card needs to be useful: make, model, variant, year, price, odometer, body, transmission, fuel, location, one thumbnail, and the link. The description, the full photo set, the seller's contact details and the transaction all stay at the source, one click away.

Cars and motorbikes, not cars with bikes attached

Motorbikes are a first-class category, not a filter applied to a car search. They have their own sources, their own fields (a bike has no body type and a car has no learner-approved status), and their own result card. A system that treats bikes as a special case of cars gets both wrong.

Where the money is not

The search is free, requires no account, and shows no advertising. Nothing is ranked higher because someone paid for it — the sort order is the one you chose, and the default is a genuine relevance ranking rather than a promoted-listings carousel.

That is a deliberate position rather than generosity: RideRadar's value is in the coverage of the index itself, which is a different business from charging sellers for placement. What that business becomes is set out at data.rideradar.com.au.
